1.0 Background of IDWF:

The IDWF aims to build a strong, democratic and united domestic/household workers global organization to protect and advance domestic workers’ rights everywhere. As of Oct 2018, the IDWF has 69 affiliates from 55 countries, representing over 600,000 domestic/household workers' members. The IDWF is currently recruiting a Program Officer to strengthen and develop its affiliates in francophone Africa.

2.0 Key Functions and activities

 This position is based in West Africa (home office) with travels to Africa’s other countries; and  has the following roles and responsibilities:

  • To strengthen the organizational development of the IDWF affiliates (domestic workers’ organizations/trade unions) in francophone Africa;
  • To establish, implement and manage capacity development programmes, including leadership training specifically in Burkina Faso, Cote-d’Ivoire, Republic of Guinea, Mali and Togo.  
  • To engage in teamwork and under the coordination of the Regional Coordinator for Africa, to ensure that the short- and long-term strategies in the francophone Africa is in alignment with the overall IDWF strategic goals of its 5-Years Strategic Plan;
  • To enhance the communication in the regions among affiliates in the francophone region and those in the rest of the region.

3.0 Scope of the work

To coordinate the programmes and activities with the IDWF affiliates in the Francophone Africa region. Its  focuses  are on four major areas:

  •  strengthening and leadership development in domestic worker organizations in Burkina Faso, Cote-d’Ivoire, Republic of Guinea, Mali and Togo.
  • Knowledge building and Capacity building through regional workshops to build foundational skills and promote knowledge-sharing, when possible, also include representatives from surrounding domestic workers organizations in Benin, Niger, and Senegal.
  • Coordinate research to find out issues faced by domestic workers and migrant workers.
  • Mobilizing, organizing and recruitment of members to increase the members in their organizations as well as IDWF.

 4.0 Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Support and be committed to workers and women rights
  • Experience in workers’ education and training, including the production of training materials
  • Good command of oral and written French and English
  • Ability and desire to travel, able to work independently and take initiative
  • Good knowledge of domestic workers’ issue and regional context

Ideally, the candidate will:   

  • Possess solid experience in working directly with workers unions at national or international level
  • With postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject (worker education, organizational development, women / gender-studies, industrial relations)

 5.0 Working hours

  • 40 hours per week, able to work a flexible schedule, e.g. during the evening and public holiday, subject to the needs of unions and domestic workers leaders
