The state of Connecticut took a giant first step forward for domestic workers in their state by passing the Connecitcut Domestic Worker Bill in the state house of representatives. Now it's off to Governor Malloy to sign into law!

Details

USA -

The Connecticut Domestic Worker Bill will provide discrimination and harassment protections at companies who employ three or more domestic workers. This bill not only creates protections for a vulnerable workforce, but affirms that sexual harassment and discrimination will not be tolerated in any industry.

But our organizing for dignity and respect is not over! The bill helps to right a historic wrong of excluding domestic workers from basic labor protections. And it paves the road for even more protections so that every domestic worker across the state can enjoy the labor rights that all workers deserve.

By signing this bill into law, Connecticut will help propel domestic workers’ rights into the 21st century. Across the country, states are doing what federal law couldn't by creating humane and just basic labor protections for the women who make all other work possible.

Connecticut will be the fifth state to have specific protections for domestic workers, following New York, California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts. There are two more states, Oregon and Illinois, considering domestic worker bills this session.

With the important leadership of immigrant women and women of color, we are shifting the way Connecticut and the rest of the country see and value millions of domestic workers and the important work that they do.
