USA: Nevada Becomes the 8th State to Pass a Domestic Worker Bill of Rights
Details
USA -
On June 12, 2017, Nevada passed Domestic Worker Bill of Rights SB 232 into law!
This is a huge victory for domestic workers in Nevada who will now be protected under the state’s minimum wage and overtime laws.
Nevada is the eighth state to pass a Domestic Worker Bill of Rights (DWBOR) becoming a leader in defending basic labor rights for a vulnerable, and often exploited, workforce.
NDWA and SEIU worked collaboratively on this legislation which will change working conditions for domestic workers throughout the state.
Under current Nevada law, house cleaners and nannies are excluded from state minimum wage and overtime protections. With the passing of SB232, which will go into effect on January 18, 2018, domestic workers will now be entitled to overtime for more than 8 hours worked in a day or 40 hours per workweek (with the exception of live-in domestic workers), limitations on deductions for food and lodging, rest breaks and days off.
An important amendment to the bill that was championed by NDWA ensures that third party agencies must comply. The final bill language, with additional protections, can be found here.
