USA -

The weekend of August 11, hundreds of neo-Nazis and white supremacists descended on Charlottesville, Virginia, using the removal of a Confederate statue as an excuse to terrorize and intimidate community members.

The people of Charlottesville, led by young people, students, and people of color, turned out to stand peacefully against this display of hate. A person, now charged with murder, plowed a car directly into the crowd of peaceful counter-protesters, killing one person and injuring at least 19 others.

Immediately afterward, NDWA released this public statement in response.

“We are horrified by the events in Charlottesville, Virginia. Our thoughts and hearts are with the victims, their families and the residents of Charlottesville that are standing up and standing together against hate and violence.

We cannot allow for the hateful rhetoric, malicious policies, and political stunts that created the context for this tragedy to continue. This [Trump] Administration, through its posture and policies, has dehumanized and targeted Black people, immigrants of color, Muslims, LGBTQ people, Jewish people, indigenous people, and women. And it’s now costing us our lives.

At the National Domestic Workers Alliance, we are dedicated to rebuilding a democracy that values and protects the humanity and dignity of every person. We, together with millions of people of conscience across the nation, will seek justice for the victims of Charlottesville and the many counted and uncounted lives lost to hate. We represent the caring majority in this country and in the end, we will win."
