Domestic workers and home nurses need above all more rights and obligatory standards, Sarah Schilliger of the Institute for Sociology Basel says, who is writing her thesis about 24-hour-nurses from Eastern Europe. Households today are not part of the work law.
“The International Labor Organization published past summer a convention for the rights of domestic workers. The nations now have to ratify it.”
The convention is more progressive than the valid right in Switzerland, says Schilliger.
“It concerns not only wages, but above all also work time. To have a 24 hours work-free time, is not normal for nurses.”
