Lima – The General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) requested the quick ratification of Convention 189 of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which recognizes the labor rights for domestic workers.

Mario Huamán, Secretary General of the CGTP, maintained that the ratification of that Convention by the Government and the Congress of the Republic will allow more than 500,000 domestic workers the fullness of labor rights, as the minimum wage, benefits of health, among other benefits.

He referred that according to a recent study, only two percent of workers have social security and can be taken care of in the network of hospitals of EsSalud.

For this reason, he ratified the necessity to advance in more reforms in favor of that labor sector.

On the other hand, the Secretary General of the Union of Domestic Workers of the Region Lima (SINTTRAHOL), Leddy Mozombite, observed that the Convention will allow the equality of benefits that other workers already enjoy in the country.

She noted down that, according to that convention, the domestic workers will have a contract in writing that stipulates allowances, minimum pay, among other rights.

At another moment, Huamán said he hoped that the Government fulfills the announcement soon to increase the Vital Minimum Remuneration (RMV), from 75 Soles up to 750 Soles.

He also reiterated the request of the CGTP so that president Ollanta Humala observes the law of the progressive elimination of the Contract of Administrative Services (CAS) and gives it back to the Congress so that it is debated in the Commission of Work with the participation and opinion of the workers' organizations.

Both leaders participated in a public hearing at the Congress of the Republic for domestic workers, who demanded the ratification of Convention 189, in order to have major labor rights.
