We urge the Parliament of Paraguay to approve the Law 5407 with the right to 100% of the minimum wage, and that it respects its national and international commitments. No to inequalities, not to discriminations! National minimum wage now!

PARAGUAY -

In solidarity with the domestic workers of Paraguay

Paying below the minimum wage is also a form of violence in the workplace!

International Domestic Workers Federation

After years of struggle, the unions of domestic workers of Paraguay have finally won a legislative victory. The Law 5407 gives them basic labour rights, making them more equal to other workers. However, the proposed law 5407 still maintains a situation of discrimination by stipulating that domestic workers should not receive "less than 60% of the national minimum wage," when their demand is to actually receive not less than the full minimum wage. They are entitled to 100% of a decent salary, not only 60%!

Indeed, domestic workers are the ones who clean, cook, take care of children and the elderly. They produce care and well-being for all the other workers. They make every other kind of work possible. Therefore, this legal discrimination is no longer acceptable. Not only it is morally unjustifiable, but it also contradicts the recommendations of ILO Convention 189, ratified by Paraguay in 2013, which prohibits any form of legal discrimination against domestic workers. Convention 189 further guarantees that domestic workers enjoy full equality of rights with other workers, including with respect to the minimum wage.

We urge the Parliament of Paraguay to approve the Law 5407 with the right to 100% of the minimum wage, and that it respects its national and international commitments.

No to inequalities, not to discriminations!

National minimum wage now!
