PARAGUAY -

Victory in Paraguay!

After years of struggle, and weeks of intense negotiations with the Parliament, the domestic workers of Paraguay have won a full victory! The law 5407, granting them basic labour rights, was approved with the inclusion of the right to the minimum wage, and not only the 60% initially proposed.

This is a massive victory of the domestic workers of Paraguay and around the world, and a proof that collective action gives results! The three unions of domestic workers of the country, Sintradi, Sintradespy and Sintradol have been fighting together for years and have reached a historical victory for their category. They managed to change the law and forced the recognition of their status as workers. They will now enjoy equal rights and a decent wage!

Marciana Santander, leader of the Union of Workers in the Domestic Services of Paraguay (Sintradespy), said: “Thanks to the ILO Convention 189 we could change history, and we are now waiting that the president enacts the law. We are very happy and thankful to the IDWF and CONLACTRAHO and all our comrades for their support. We’re almost there, not a step back!”

We congratulate the domestic workers of Paraguay, and urge the president to enact the law and make it effective immediately. It would be unthinkable to go against the ILO Convention and its own Parliament.

Minimum wage now!
