MEXICO -

The president of the Local Conciliation and Arbitration Council (JLCA) of Mexico City, Ramon Montaño, called to the employers of domestic workers to conduct themselves with respect towards the domestic workers and to value what they contribute to a family.

In an interview he commented that at the moment 2,158 women domestic workers have presented demands before that instance against their employers for unwarranted dismissal.

The majority of those workers lacked social security, worked more than 12 hours from Monday to Saturday and even asserted battering and discrimination for their educative level and socioeconomic origin.

Ramon Montaño informed that from 2008 to 2011 the Local Conciliation and Arbitration Council solved other 2,437 judgments of domestic workers to their benefit.

With regard to the International Day of Domestic Work, commemorated the 30 of March, the civil servant explained that in the JLCA they began a program to expedite those judgments.

“We searched for an agreement of those workers with their ex-employer, they conclude the judgment by means of the conciliation and thus they receive the indemnification which corresponds to them according to the law for the time they were serving”, he indicated.

Montaño mentioned that the domestic workers generally get their demand intimidated by the employers, so that it is a priority for the JLCA to provide labor justice to the sector.

“The first what we have to explain to them is that they have rights, that the law protects them and that they must not be intimidated. Later we orient them so that they initiate a case and present their proofs”, he explained.
