KENYA -

November 28-29, 2011, Nairobi, Kenya

The Africa Regional Workshop was participated by 25 participants, almost all were leaders of domestic workers trade unions from 15 countries. Among them, four were affiliates of the IUF.

The Workshop was opened by the Chair of IDWN, Myrtle Witbooi who congratulated the participants for having gone this far in terms of building domestic workers unions. Indeed, as reported by Vicky Kanyoka, the Regional Coordinator, the number of domestic workers trade unions has increased significantly in the last two years (figures to be collected by Vicky).

The Workshop facilitated by Chris Bonner from WIEGO, consisted of skill trainings and sharing of experiences around the ratification campaign of C189 and organizing domestic workers.

Experiences in organizing domestic workers in South Africa, Benin and Hong Kong were presented. On the other hand, a lot of informal sharings took place spontaneously and from time to time throughout the two-day Workshop as many participants brought with them membership recruitment forms and record books, education materials, photos of various activities, etc. ready to show to everyone. These were some of the most heartening moments of the Workshop.

At the end of the Workshop, the participants went into workshop groups to discuss priorities and future plans on organizing and the ratification. The important areas include developing African network of domestic workers organizations; to focus on the issues of HIV/AIDS, social securities and minimum wage for domestic workers.

Lastly they agreed and planned to mark the June 16 as the International Domestic Workers Day and to mobilize for immediate ratification of the C189 by governments.
