HONG KONG -

Update on June 12: Public Forum to be postponed due to rainy weather.

###

To celebrate International Domestic Workers Day, FADWU (Hong Kong Federation of Asian Domestic Workers Unions) and HKCTU (Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions) are jointly organizing an open activity on 12 June 2016 in Edinburgh Place, Central.

The theme of this year’s celebration is

“My Fair Home: Monitoring on Employment Agency”.

This campaign aims to encourage fair treatment of domestic workers by their employers through making 7 simple commitments. By signing a pledge, employers agree to maintain a reasonable working environment for domestic workers, and to support domestic workers to file complaints against unfair employment agencies.

The Labor Department of Hong Kong has drafted a Code of Practice for Employment Agencies (CoP) in April this year.  The CoP draft is now under public consultation.

FADWU welcomes the government's move but it believes that a more proactive monitoring and inspection on employment agencies (EA) with stricter legal provisions are necessary to ensure rights of domestic workers will not be exploited.

This is also beneficial to both employers and migrant domestic workers. People in Hong Kong and employers should support migrant domestic workers to file complaints against the illegal practices of employment agencies - let's build A FAIR HOME for domestic workers.

Alongside with the launch of My Fair Home campaign,  a public forum was organized. Employers’ associations representatives,  representative of FADWU, fair employment agency will join us in expressing their views on CoP as well as the monitoring of employment agencies. Following the forum, it is our pleasure to have our affiliations perform for the occasion.
